Myself

I have known Dr. Makarand Rane over a period of one year when he joined our physician team as Registrar in the Department of Obstetric Medicine at Fernandez Hospital, Hyderabad, India, from February 2019 to February 2020. He reported to me directly as I was his designated supervisor. During this period, he followed inpatients with medical complications in the wards as well as in HDU, ICU, and labor ward daily, attended medical emergencies in pregnancy during nights too, and reported to the consultant physician.

He has been exposed to a variety of medical problems in pregnancy, including cardiovascular, neurological, hematological, rheumatological, psychiatric, gastrointestinal and hepatic systems, renal diseases, etc. He conducted outpatient services independently in the Obstetric Medicine department under the surveillance of consultants.

He is dedicated to the field of Obstetric Medicine, as seen by his enthusiasm in joining as registrar in our hospital soon after he completed his M.D. in General Medicine. Dr. Rane is capable of taking history, conducting appropriate examination, formulating a management plan, ordering appropriate investigations and treatment confidently. He could discuss the differential diagnosis competently with the consultants. His power of observation and perseverance in following the cases to their outcome and later follow-up are remarkable.

He is keen on academics too, as seen by his initiative in presenting cases in hospital academic meetings, SOMI (Society of Obstetric Medicine India) meetings, and teaching medical topics to fellows under training in high-risk obstetrics. On his own initiative, he did case studies and case reports during his tenure with us, some of which are published in indexed journals. To name a few: A prospective observational study (780 cases) of postpartum thromboprophylaxis: a comparison between RCOG, ACOG, and Fernandez guidelines; risk of bleeding versus cost-effectiveness. A retrospective study (involving over 1100 mothers) on the spectrum of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, which he presented in a regional critical care conference in Hyderabad, India, in 2019. Case series of ‘methemoglobinemia in pregnancy’ and ‘Wernicke’s encephalopathy in hyperemesis gravidarum’. He also expresses his interest in studying predictors of disease complications and formulating preventive strategies.

He is sincere, disciplined, hardworking, and honest. He is compassionate with patients, has good communication skills and bedside manners, is a good team player, and gets along well with his colleagues and superiors. His up-to-date knowledge in Medicine with an insight into Obstetric physiology creates a perfect blend for specialization in Obstetric Medicine.

I have no hesitation in recommending him for this program as he is not only suitable but also well-motivated and has a lot of potential to excel in this branch of medicine.
